Lewis Carroll

Lewis Carroll is actually the pen name for a man named Charles Dodgson. Charles knew from a young age that he wanted to create things for children. As a child he created games for his friends and his younger neighbors. When he got a little older he began to write stories for children. His most famous children's story is Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
Charles was a very well educated man. He wrote several articles for science journals. He lectured on math. Charles also wrote many political articles. |

Charles was influenced by his love of children. He loved to entertain them. In fact, his inspiration for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland came from telling a story to Henry Liddell's daughter at a picnic. His daughter's name was Alice which is why the main character's name is that. She loved the story so much she asked Charles to write it down and give it to her so she would always have it. Of course, his version of the story is a little different than Walt Disney's Alice in Wonderland. He wrote it down and somehow a publisher got a hold of it. When he went to revise it for publishing, he decided to use a pen name since he was shy about having others know about his gift for writing.
After writing this story he went on to write Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There. However, they were not published until after his death. He was also known for his photography which included many photographs of children. Some claim that the photos are proof of his abusive nature towards children, but to this point they are said to only be silly claims. The controversy is still studied today. |
